But Melee made it famous in the smash community, and they have had several games worth to expand the cast (like they have done with practically every franchise that has made it into smash.) The fact other franchises have fewer fighters is mainly down to when they were first included, popularity in smash, and number of options they have for characters they could include.Fire Emblem was early, popular, and has a massive cast to pick from.

Compared to Splatoon, which has one rep that is very recent, has few options for expansion (not none, but not enough), and I don't know what kind of reception it has received, but it's certainly too early to say whether future games would get more reps.In short, illogical? Not in the slightest. If you didn't know the history of smash, it might seem illogical, but anyone that was there at every step should understand how it happened. In regards to the response; this announcement trailer is, by far, the most downvoted of the DLC Directs. In terms of the older characters, Roy was so successful that they removed him from the game for over a decade in order to prop up a two game series that is still the worst selling in franchise history.

4 didn't need three new entries (although selfishly, I'm happy they brought Roy back), and Ultimate really doesn't need Chrom. I will readily admit that Byleth is a smart addition due to the popularity of 3H, but, again, Fire Emblem doesn't need 8 characters, particularly when 4 of them are almost identical in terms of movesets. You are forgetting how insanely popular Marth got (Roy only less so because the movesets were essentially identical and speed was everything back then.)Yes, they removed a clone moveset for Ike, who was just the Roy sub. Ike was insanely popular, if not in the competitive community, definitely in the casual community. With two hit characters, can you blame them for padding the roster of smash 4? And Robin and Corrin were quite unique (Lucina was just Roy 2, a Marth clone on every level, I can't explain that away.) Roy coming back with an altered moveset was a smart move (it's a low hanging fruit to tinker with something existing), but of course he would have been back in ultimate anyway.So, barring Lucina and Chrom (and they are echo fighters anyway), we ended up with a nice distinct cast that made sense to include based on the then-popularity.

But, like FEH and Camilla, there is a tipping point where the fanbase sours and the people in charge are slow on the uptake. Byleth is being hated on unnecessarily because of the saturation, and not because it was a dumb idea. Gen 1 started with two reps, then got two more over two decades. That's not at all bad.In total, we have four reps from gen 1, one from gen 2, one from gen 4, one from gen 6 and one from gen 7, for a total of eight fighters. (Beyond that, there are dozens of other Pokemon included in stages or pokeballs.)But Mario is pretty similar, having multiple reps from single entries (ish, it's hard to determine exactly which game each rep is meant to originate from due to overlap.) Starfox has similar issues with overlap (through no fault of it's own.)Considering four of the Pokemon fighters were introduced during gens 1 and 2, I don't see how they could really do much more without flooding the game with Pokemon. (To get even one rep per gen would require at least three more fighters.).
